When a lady bent on ruining rogues and a duke set on revenge attempt to derail each other’s plans, passion erupts into a love for the ages.
After being left brokenhearted by a duplicitous rake, Anne Adair no longer desires a husband—she wants justice. She’s traded in her foolish dream of happily-ever-after for the much more sensible one of thwarting the blackhearted lords who prey on innocent debutantes. But her first mission proves rather complicated when the dashing, devilish Duke of Kilmartin comes to the aid of her target.
Simon Sedgewick, the newly titled Duke of Kilmartin, never thought he would return to England, let alone attend a ball full of simpering lords. But when his oldest friend’s reputation is being smeared and Simon discovers that the perpetrator is none other than his enemy’s granddaughter, his long-festering desire for vengeance flares to life.
The moment Simon spies Miss Anne Adair across the glittering ballroom, he knows that the ravishing beauty is the perfect instrument for the retribution he thought lost to him. He does not know, however, that Anne has devised a scheme of her own. And soon, these two wary hearts will discover that the best laid plans are no match for love.
Never in his life had Simon been at a loss for words, but in this moment, he could not think of what to say. He did not want to lie, yet to tell the truth…
“Do not bother answering,” Anne said, waving a hand at him. “Your guilt shows on your face. You may try to seduce me. I give you carte blanche.”
“Are ye challenging me?” he asked, amazed and aroused at once.
She quirked her mouth. “I suppose I am, though I had not known I was going to do so until this second. I will permit you to try to seduce me, as I know that is what you are attempting to do, and in exchange for my continuing to come here and allow your attempts, you will do your utmost to convince Lord Rutledge to wed Lady Fanny.”
“By God, I want to seduce you, but in this moment, it has absolutely nothing to do with vengeance,” he said, meaning it.
Some books can be part of a series yet be a standalone. This is a perfect example of one that will make you fall in love with the characters and also the author. Once I started to read this one it kept me wanting more until the very end. The way that the author wrote her characters and scenes gave you an amazing understanding so that when you closed your eyes you could imagine exactly how everything looked. I will say that the flow of the story was smooth and elegant which fit right into that time frame of when the story took place. And you were able to see that this author put enough love and research with her readers in mind. You have two main characters so different yet so alike with pasts that haunt them. Will they help find each other and break down those walls or will the revenge on both sides be too much.
Anne, unlike most of the ton woman, has her own mind. She has secrets that is better left in the dark. Due to that past she has made up her mind to help others that are considered helpless. The author shows us her strength and also shows that underneath those strengths lies weaknesses. She soon learns that not all is as it is made to seem in the run of the ton. To what extend will she go to find out what was a lie and what was the truth.
Simon, cast out by no fault of his own and by a man who was supposed to love him because they are family returns to a place that he does not consider home anymore. A new man that is set on revenge no matter what or who stands in the way. A stranger. Deep down as you get to know him his true nature comes out that will make any woman fall for him and his nature. However, will he change for one woman or will his revenge overcome.
This is one novel I give my highest recommendation for someone looking for a new read. The author made sure to give us a large view of the history in that time frame but added her own touch to it. Are you looking for a novel that also has deception and scandal yet love be sure to pick this one up for your next read.
As a little girl I loved to create fantasy worlds and then give all my friends roles to play. Of course, I was always the heroine! Books have always been an escape for me and brought me so much pleasure, but it didn’t occur to me that I could possibly be a writer for a living until I was in a career that was not my passion. One day, I decided I wanted to craft stories like the ones I loved, and with a great leap of faith I quit my day job and decided to try to make my dream come true. I discovered my passion, and I have never looked back. I feel incredibly blessed and fortunate that I have been able to make a career out of sharing the stories that are in my head! I write Scottish Medieval Romance, Regency Romance, and I have even written a Paranormal Romance book. And because I have the best readers in the world, I have hit the USA Today bestseller list several times.
