Review ~ To Love and Serve by Caridad Piñeiro

blurb 2

Five years ago, vampire Ryder Latimer stepped into the path of a bullet meant for FBI Agent Diana Reyes, at once saving her life and condemning her to death when his blood contaminates her open wounds. Now only an experimental treatment, transfusions, and allowing Ryder to sink his teeth into her when they make love keep her alive.

Born to Survive…

Ryder has always known that no matter what they try, Diana can’t possibly survive what contact with his blood did to her. The reality for him is that no matter how much he loves her, he will lose her if he doesn’t turn her—a choice Diana may have put off for too long.

Born to Serve…

Even as her health continues to deteriorate and they battle with that difficult decision, Diana tracks a serial killer targeting their vampire friends. It’s a dangerous job, but she was born to it and, with Ryder’s help, she’ll serve and protect until the day she dies—or until a miracle turns their world upside down.

The author had me immediately from the start with this book, she didn’t have too many details or too little. In my opinion, your given enough to understand what is going on and enjoy the book. She delivers awesome paranormal romances that keeps the readers involved and pulls you into the world of the novels. From what I can take with this book and also previous ones she has installed secret messages that reflects what happens in real life and how decisions you make can either have a good outcome or a negative outcome.

Ryder has always let himself been outside and lonely until he met Diana. Since he has met her he has started to take a more involved take with his own kind (vampires). He is the reason why she is still alive and yet he blames himself for the reasons on why she is become weaker and sick even though he continues to try and help.

Diana has to make a hard decision between life or death, but she is scared. Will her being afraid cause her to make a decision that could not only affect her decision but also those around that love her. She loves her job and will do anything to continue working as an FBI agent. But when vampires start dying the Vampire council requests Ryder to help to find this killer before someone close becomes the next target.

This can be considered a stand-alone and I would highly recommend this book to any paranormal readers. But I would also recommend you to go back and read the first book in this series, which is also a great novel. I will be waiting for the next one in the series to read! This is a must read!

I loved that the author decided to write a stand point from the villain’s view. Every villain should be able to tell their tale too in my opinion. Even though I enjoyed Surrender better, I still loved this one because she showed it in a darker and more fitting to that of a villain. You are able to understand what Kalliel went through with the Flames. This novella shows you also more insight on the love bonds between Kalliel and Krishani. I do hope that she does this with her other books, writing a novella for the main books and this shows another aspect of how talented this author is.

excerpt 2

She flushed with fear as she tried to stay calm and still. There was a splash behind her and her heart did a double jump. She clenched her fists together and gritted her teeth. She trembled to the bone and her mouth threatened to erupt in a succession of screams. She held her lips together and stifled the faint whines in the back of her throat. A sharp strike of flint sounded against the stone, and she cringed as she turned to witness the foe.
En guyen naha lin sanse.
Kaliel understood it this time. The Flame inside of her struggled with all of its might to emerge. As she closed her eyes, it rushed out of her. She took a sharp breath as she looked at the people in the cell. There was a body on fire next to the girl now, flames smoking out of his form as the foul smell grew thicker.
The one with rosy pink eyes stared at her and the meaning of the words flooded her mind. Run. Hide. He will take your soul.
The foe didn’t seek to kill the Flames, he sought to possess them. Kaliel felt sick to her stomach as she fought to bring herself out of the dream, back to reality, back to the place where she could find Krishani, warn Mallorn, tell the elders everything she had seen. She tried to close her eyes, but she felt like they were fused open as the foe crouched beside the girl and presented a tiny crystal clear orb. She watched as the pink essence from the girl’s eyes flowed into the orb, turning it into milky pink vapors. The foe stood as the girl slumped to the side, dead.
Desperate, Kaliel tried to back away, but the foe turned his gaze towards the darkened tunnel. His white-lightning eyes sparked, making contact with her amethyst enflamed ones until everything fell away into awful blackness.

I have not found a book by this author that does not have a gorgeous cover.  The details to this book will keep the reader well in knowledge of what is going on and the surroundings of the characters. I enjoyed this the most because there were no stones left unturned for your mind to wonder if a portion of the story was missing, this tends to happen in fantasy books. The author truly wanted you to picture what you were going to be reading about, and I loved the visualizations that they brought me.

This book has all the perks of a great fantasy book adventures, magic, fighting, and love that should not be. The story is about two Elvins who consistently causing more problems and disappointing the elders. The author also helped out by giving us a little guide incase we needed some information on who was who.   As you read you are able to see from both point of views from the main characters of Krishani and Kaliel.  The flow of the story even with the point of view changes were still continuously without a flaw. Everyone has destinies to fill and these two may end up needing to find different paths, are they meant to be? And if so what will they do to overcome their true destiny.

The author has left the ending of the story for another but your wait was not long. I would definitely recommend this to all Fantasy lovers!!! I have truly enjoyed this book and will admit that the author has her own unique writing style. It is amazing!

Eighteen-year-old Averie’s life is turned upside-down when she’s instructed by her long-missing mother to enroll in an international college despite her being a local. Soon after, Averie discovers she is a nephilim—part human part angel—and her young life drastically changes from awfully droning to incomprehensibly hectic as she juggles college work, bullying, demanding training sessions with a surprising fit seventy-year-old, family issues, and the one thing she’s most skeptical of: love. When adults in her life don’t fulfill their rightful responsibilities, she’s forced to take those neglected responsibilities into her own hands and set everyone’s life back on the right track. With the aid of a special Japanese classmate Sasuke, and a fiercely determined and righteous attitude, will Averie be strong enough to overcome the challenges in her difficult adolescence?

I stared at him in shock; this was getting completely out of hand. At this rate, he would really be failing Ms. Psychotic’s class.

Slinging his backpack over his shoulder, he said to me, “Let’s go?”

There was a collective gasp of shock in the lab. Following his lead, I packed up as well, and before long, the two of us were out of the lab, leaving the rest of the class gawking in disbelief.

When we were out of view, Sasuke turned to me. “Let’s chill at my room until the next class. What do you think?”

For a moment, I wondered what room he was talking about, but I quickly realised it could only be his hostel. With no other idea in mind, I agreed. Sasuke led the way, and I found myself outside a boys’ toilet soon after.

“Wait here,” he said before disappearing into the toilet.

Maybe he needed the washroom badly?

Seconds later, Sasuke emerged from the toilet and indicated for me to come in. “No one’s inside. Come on.”

“What? Are you serious? This is the gents!” I told him, as though he didn’t know already.

“I need to zap us there. We can’t just walk into the hostel during school hours. There’s a guard on duty,” he explained.

“Oh. Okay…” With little choice, I stepped into the gents with Sasuke.

“Ready?” he asked, holding out his open hand.

I took it and closed my eyes. “Ready.”

The same old discomfort washed over me.

“We’re here,” he said, and I felt him letting go.

I opened my eyes to a small, neat room with two beds, two desks, two chairs, two wardrobes—all mirroring each other—and some shelves against the wall between the desks. Only one side of the room seemed to be occupied, so I asked, “You don’t have a roommate?”

Arie Reynolds is a strong willed, independent woman. Her life as a stuntwoman in movies is enough to keep her fulfilled. After nearly losing her life in an accident, she finds that she has a new “ability” – one that allows her to cross into a parallel reality. When she’s once again faced with her mortality, she must decide how she’ll use her ability — will it save her life or will she end up losing the one thing that matters most?

Cole Mercer is a charming firefighter who’s used to getting what he wants out of life, until he fell for Arie. Through the difficulties of her career and a seemingly impossible choice, can Arie make the right choice? Can Cole tame this spitfire’s heart or will he be the one that ends up getting burned?

Cole Mercer

Graham leaned in and wrapped his arms around Arie. She laid her head on his shoulder and sighed. They stayed in that position for awhile — Graham tried to comfort the sister who thought she’d lost it all, all the while not knowing that some days she was the only one that gave him the strength to go on.

Connect with the Author

1. Did you always wanted to be a writer? If not what did you want to be?

I did a lot of writing in college, but when I graduated I was first was a 4th grade teacher and then a realtor.  I only started writing about 18 months ago as a career.

 2. When did you first consider yourself a “writer”?.

I considered myself a writer from the moment I started writing my story.  However, I didn’t tell people that I was an author until the day that my first book was published.

 3. How long did it take to get your first book published?

It took 5 months from the time I started writing Worlds Apart until the time it was published.

 4. Do you do another job except for writing and can you tell us more about it?

I am a full time mother to three wonderful children along with having my real estate license.

 5. What is the name of your latest book, and if you had to summarize it in less than 20 words what would you say?

My latest book that I’m currently writing is Broken.  It’s a love story about two people that have had traumatic experiences in their lives and have come out broken. Can they both let go of the ghosts that haunt their nightmares and move on together or are they too broken?  I guess that’s a little more than 20 words.  haha

 6. As a self-pulisher, do you have any plans to submit to a publish company?

It is my understanding  some authors prefer to stay as a self publish author because of flexibility.  I would definitely consider signing with a publishing company.  It would just depend on what type of contract they were hoping for.  I would still like to have a lot of say in what happens with my books.

 7. How long does it usually take you to write a book, from the original idea to finishing writing it?

It usually takes me anywhere from 3-6 months to write depending on if my kids have school breaks.  🙂

 8. What can we expect from you in the future? ie More books of the same genre?Books of a different genre?

I’m currently writing Broken which is a stand alone contemporary romance.  I’ll come back to paranormal romance in the future with the next generation of “jumpers” in a trilogy called The Last to Jump.

 9. What made you decide to write that genre of book?

I’ve had this idea in my head for three years.  I wanted something different than most books out there.  I needed to have the paranormal aspect for it to work.

 10. Do you have a certain routine you have for writing? (ex. write better at nights, with music, etc)

The first book I wrote at night with piano music.  Now I write during the day with no music.  🙂  It changed when all of my kids started going to school during the day.  My youngest is in kindergarten now so I have more time during the day to write.

 11. Do you choose a title first, or write the book then choose the title? How do come up with the titles?

It depends.  With the first and second book, I came up with the titles after I started writing them.  I always knew that I wanted the third book to be Spitfire because it depicted the type of person Arie is.

 12. Are there any hidden messages or morals contained in your books?

My books are about hope and second chances.  I think that to be happy in life you have to have hope and positivity.  I hope that my readers walk away from my series feeling a sense of hope about where my characters’ lives have taken them.

 13. Your favorite food is?

I love Italian food and all things chocolate.

14. Your favorite singer/group is?

I don’t really have a favorite singer or group.  I like Justin Timberlake and Maroon 5.

15. Your favorite Author is?

I have a lot of authors that have inspired me over the years.  I grew up reading Nora Roberts and Nicholas Sparks.  Now I read a lot of Indie authors and enjoy having so many to pick from.

16. When you aren’t writing what do you do to relax and have fun?

I love going to movies, reading, and spending time with my family.  My three kiddos keep me busy going to all of their sporting events.  🙂
